Course Summary
Students will explore the major body systems, show an understanding of client screening and lifestyle assessment, fitness training methods and fitness programming, explore the knowledge and skills required for different career pathways in the sports industry and gain as understanding of the requirements of fitness testing.
Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology in Sport and Exercise Science - Examination
Unit 2: Psychology in Sport and Exercise Science - Non examined assessment
Unit 3: Biomechanics - Examination
Unit 4: Nutrition in Sport and Exercise Science - Non examined assessment
Unit 5: Applied Science in Sports Injuries and Rehabilitation - Non examined assessment
40% external assessment (written exams and controlled tasks).
60% internal assessment (assignments, projects, applied tasks).
There is a combination of assessment styles to give students the confidence to apply their knowledge in order to succeed in the workplace. It will also provide the relevant skills to aid students wishing to progress to higher education. The wider range of vocational assessments, both practical and written, ensures that students can showcase their learning and achievements in a variety of ways: assignments, pre-released tasks and written exams.
Students are expected to keep files of written coursework, log books of practical performance and be involved in sport both inside and outside of school.
Course Details
Expectations of Independent Study
Students will take part in a number of practical activities, interviews, and vocational situations and will be involved in visits to local sports facilities and organisations.
Students will work independently and in smaller groups on tasks and assignments. Students will need to be committed to the demands of this course which will include volunteering to experience and develop coaching skills
What skills and knowledge will I develop by studying this subject?
This course offers the opportunity to develop the essential skills that can be used across other areas and not exclusively to Sport
• Transferable skills such as teamwork, leadership experience, and confidence and communication skills that will help students excel in all manner of careers.
• A life-long passion for sport and a healthy lifestyle that will complement any future career choices.
• Understanding of key anatomical structures and functions
Who will this course be suitable for?
The course provides an excellent foundation for careers in sport science, sporting excellence, health and fitness industries and relevant higher education courses. This stimulating and challenging vocational course is for students who have a passion for sport and ideally intend to study for a degree in Sport or pursue a career in the Sports Industry. It covers both the theory and practical aspects of sport. However, it can also supplement other courses in Business, Health & Social Care, Psychology, Sociology, and Forensics to widen the progression routes.

Entry requirements
Grade 4 or higher or Merit in Physical Education/ Sport is desirable but not essential as long as there is a clear interest in a sporting field
