Course Summary
What will you learn?
Level 3 Cambridge Technical in Sport and Physical Activity qualifications help students to achieve their potential and progress to the next stage of their lives, whether that’s higher education, an apprenticeship or employment. The course is designed to include exciting content that’s up to date, engaging, fit for purpose and suitable.
How will you learn?
A wide range of centre assessed units with practical and wider project-based assessment opportunities, as well as examined units on the body systems and the long and short term impacts of sport and physical activity; how sport is organised and the purpose of sports development; health and safety requirements in sport and physical activity; the purpose of, and how to conduct research in sport and physical activity; and how businesses in sport are organised and what success looks like to them.
Course Details
Year 1
Unit 1 Body systems and the effects of physical activity.
In this unit you will gain an understanding of the structures and functions of the key body systems, how these support and impact performance in sport and physical activity and the effects that physical activity, training and lifestyle can have on them.
Unit 2 Sports coaching and activity leadership
The main part of the unit is related to you developing the skills and understanding necessary to effectively plan and deliver a series of sports or activity sessions reflecting on your own practice and using this feedback to improve your performance as a sports coach or activity leader.
Unit 3 Sports organisation and development
In this unit you will gain an understanding of the organisations involved in sport in the UK, their roles and responsibilities and how they work together. You will also gain an understanding of sports development, including the organisations involved, who sports development is targeted at and why, how sports development is carried out and how the success of sports development initiatives can be measured.
Year 2
Unit 17 Sports injuries and rehabilitation
This unit will teach you how to recognise and treat common sports injuries both immediately and through long-term rehabilitation programmes, the possible psychological impacts of sports injuries and how to minimise the risk of sports injuries occurring in the first instance.
Unit 18 Practical skills in sport and physical activities
This unit gives you the opportunity to participate in a number of different sports and outdoor and adventurous activities which allows you to experience first-hand situations that participants you may later be coaching or leading will come across. In this unit you will learn how to apply skills, tactics, techniques and knowledge in individual sports, team sports and outdoor and adventurous activities which will allow you to participate effectively, safely and enjoyably.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Assessment 1: Body Systems and the effects of physical activity, written exam, 1 hour 30 minutes.
Learners should study the different body systems and the impacts of physical activity and lifestyle on them within the taught content in the context of a range of sport and physical activity situations.
Assessment 2: Sports Coaching and activity leadership, internally set assignments
This unit will give you an understanding behind the theory of what makes good sports coaches and activity leaders and methods that can be employed to improve the performance of participants. You will explore the roles and responsibilities of coaches and leaders and how these differ from each other and others involved in delivering and teaching sport and physical activity.
Assessment 3: Sports Organisation and Development, internally set assignments
Learners should study the organisation of sport and sports development in the UK within the taught content in the context of a range of real organisations, interactions, initiatives and campaigns. Exam papers for this unit will use real sports development campaigns, initiatives and statistics
Assessment 4&5, Internally set assignments
As a new course the final assessments will be decided upon when staffing and students are know.
Entry requirements
Please we will review applications for CTEC Sport following our Application Deadline. At this point a decision will be made on whether to run A Level PE or CTEC Sport. Applicants should review the A Level PE course to understand the differences. If a student only wishes to study A Level PE they must contact the College by emailing 6application@heathfieldcc.co.uk

Where Next?
On completion of the Level 3 Cambridge Technical course, students can use tariff points to help gain access to higher education, continue on the job training, or work in the sports industry.
Course Combination
The course combines well with a wide range of A level and vocational subjects in the humanities and sciences, including Geography, Psychology and Biology.
