Course Summary

his qualification focuses on the development of knowledge and skills needed to work in the Engineering sector and prepares students to enter this sector through employment or as an Apprentice. The two-year course has been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares learners for work. Therefore, the course also includes a minimum expectation of 45 days industry placement across the two years. 80% of the time will be in learning content with 20% practical hands-on experience in the workplace.

Course Details

On completion of the Engineering Common Core content, learners will develop knowledge and understanding of and skills in the following areas:

1. Working within engineering and manufacturing sectors

2. Essential mathematics and science for engineering

3. Mechanical, electrical and mechatronic principles

4. Health and Safety principles

5. Business management required within the sector to provide a product or service with success

6. Skills in project management and delivery of a project

In addition, students will specialise in the supporting Occupational Specialism of Mechanical Engineering.


How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment consists of two externally set exams covering knowledge from the Engineering Common Core content, one employer-set project covering knowledge and skills from the Engineering Common Core and one occupational specialism assessment that will feature a considerable practical element and is composed of a series of holistic practical tasks relating to the specialism topic they have studied.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 9-5 grades in GCSE examinations including English and Maths
