Course Summary

Classical Civilisation A Level gives you an understanding of some of the oldest and most engaging literature and art ever produced.

You will gain a deep insight into the Greek and Roman world, from which sprang much of European thought and art, and which underlies our modern cultural outlook.

Course Details

This course is uniquely interdisciplinary, combining elements of literature, history and philosophy. You will develop a range of skills, such as deductive reasoning, analysis and essay writing.

You will study The World of the Hero, Greeks and Barbarians and Greek Religion.

Progression onto Year Two

Progression to the second year of this A Level course will be dependent on having made satisfactory progress in the first year of the course, including achieving at least an E grade in a formal late spring assessment, as well as the maintenance of a good level of attendance and commitment throughout the year.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

There are three external examinations taken at the end of the second year of study.

There is a mix of long and short answer essay questions using both critical thinking and source analysis skills.

Entry requirements

For an A Level programme of study, we require students to have a range of at least five to seven GCSE passes at grade 5 or higher, including a minimum of a 4 in English and Mathematics, but students must also satisfy the minimum entry criteria for A Level Classical Civilisation below.

  • Grade 5 in GCSE English Language or English Literature

And

  • Grade 5 in at least one other predominantly written based GCSE subject (from subjects such as English Language, English Literature, History, Religious Studies, Modern Foreign Language, Drama and Theatre or Sociology)

Your next steps...

Teaching and postgraduate research are clear career options for those who want to work directly with the classical material, but classics degrees also prepare students for a very wide range of other career paths. Many classicists go on to train for professions such as the law or accountancy. Companies are often ready to employ people with classics qualifications in administrative and managerial roles.
