Course Summary
Food Science and Nutrition is an exciting new course which will allow students to learn about the relationship between the human body and food as well as developing practical skills linked to experimental work and the cooking and preparation of food and understanding the relationship of food science and nutrition and its relevance to many industries and job roles.
Care providers and nutritionists in hospitals also use this knowledge, as do sports coaches and fitness instructors. Hotels and restaurants, food manufacturers and government agencies also use this understanding to develop menus, food products and policies that that support healthy eating initiatives. Many employment opportunities within the field of food science and nutrition will be available to you if you study this qualification.
Learners will be involved in weekly practical sessions and will build on the skills and knowledge developed at GCSE level.
Course Details
You will complete three units: two mandatory and one optional, over the two years.
Assessment is through a combination of a written exam and external assignment set and marked by WJEC and two internally marked assignments.
Unit 1: Meeting nutritional needs of specific groups (Assessed by exam and non-exam assessment)
This unit will enable you to demonstrate an understanding of the science of food safety, nutrition and nutritional needs in a wide range of contexts, and through on-going practical sessions,to gain practical skills to produce quality food items to meet the needs of individuals.
Unit 2: Ensuring Food is Safe to Eat
This unit will allow you to develop your understanding of the science of food safety and hygiene; essential knowledge for anyone involved in food production in the home or wishing to work in the food industry. Practical sessions will support the gaining of theoretical knowledge and ensure learning is a tactile experience.
Optional Units:
Studying one of the two optional units allows learners the opportunity to study subjects of particular interest or relevance to them, building on previous learning and experiences.
Unit 3: Experimenting to Solve Food Production Problems or Unit 4: Current Issues in Food Science and Nutrition
Unit 3 or Unit 4 are assessed internally: you will need to respond to a set assignment brief at any time within the academic year, which will be marked by your teacher and moderated by WJEC.

Entry requirements
General entry requirements: Grade 4 in English Language and Maths together with 3 other GCSE grades at grade 4 or above is the minimum requirement to enter Hillview Sixth Form.
Grade 5 or above in Food Preparation and Nutrition and/or DT related subjects.
Grade 4 or above in English Language, Science and/or Maths. APS 4.25.

This course will enable learners to move on to a wide range of Food and Nutrition courses at Foundation and Degree level and will gain the required knowledge to be able to use the qualification to support entry to higher education including BSc Public Health Nutrition, BSc Food Science and Technology, Dietician, Nutritionist.
