Year 1 Core Maths

The course prepares students for a variety of technical and professional roles through learning about mathematical modelling, costing, risk and the use of spreadsheets. Financial problem solving is a part of the qualification; this is important for all learners, irrespective of their future ambitions.

This qualification gives learners the mathematical skills to tackle problems in a variety of situations. It enables them to strengthen the mathematical knowledge and skills which they have learnt at GCSE and apply them to the problems they will encounter in further study, life and employment. The use of technology, in particular spreadsheets, is an integral part of the course.

Using mathematics creatively to address authentic problems, communicating, thinking clearly and evaluating quantitative statements are features of this qualification. The ability to reason confidently using quantitative information and to check the accuracy of statements made by others is important for all future study and employment as well as for effective participation in everyday life.

Year 2 Accounting

The course emphasises both financial accounting (the recording of past events), and management accounting as a means of future planning and decision making. Students will study the interrelationship between financial accounting and aspects of management accounting. They will develop an understanding of the principles of ethical behaviour which inform the actions of all those working within an accounting environment. Students will learn the concept double entry model and accounting principles and concepts as these form the foundation of all financial accounting techniques. They will also understand how accounting can be used to inform judgements, solve problems and make decisions. Students will use the concepts of financial reporting to convey information to stakeholders, making logical arguments and providing sound judgements based on analysis of available evidence taking account of financial and non-financial factors.

The aim is to emphasise and encourage the following widely recognised outcomes:

• Sound understanding of mathematical concepts, skills and techniques from GCSE and beyond
• Fluency in procedural skills, common problem solving skills and strategies
• Confidence in applying mathematical and statistical thinking and reasoning in a range of new and unfamiliar contexts to solve real life problems
• Competency in interpreting and explaining solutions of problems in context.

This Level 3 Certificate is a linear qualification with 100% external assessment comprising two timed, written examination papers.

Students will require a minimum of five A*-C/9-4 grades at GCSE, including English and

Mathematics at grade 5.

Successful completion of this course will fulfil the Mathematical requirements of a number of courses and career choices in, for example, business, geography, ICT, psychology, sociology or health and social care, teacher training or health professional training courses.
