General Sixth Form Entry Requirements: - Minimum 4 GCSE passes at Grade 4 and above to study BTEC or vocational courses; 5 GCSE passes at 4 and above to study A level/BTEC combination; 5 GCSE's at Grades 5 and above to study straight A Levels.

Course Summary

The Pearson Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in Early Childhood Development (Extended Certificate) provides students with a comprehensive foundation in child development and early years care. Designed to be studied alongside A Levels, this qualification covers essential topics including children’s physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development, safeguarding and safety practices, the role of play in learning, and reflective practice in early years settings. Through a blend of theoretical study and practical experience, students gain the skills and knowledge required for higher education and careers in early years education, nursing, social work, and related fields.

Course Details

The course covers a range of topics, including:

Unit 1: Children’s Development

Examining developmental progress from birth to eight years, including theories, principles, and factors influencing development.

Unit 2: Keeping Children Safe

Focuses on health, safety, and safeguarding within early years settings, covering legal responsibilities and emergency responses.

Unit 3: Play and Learning

Exploration of play theories and the role of play in cognitive, social, and physical development.

Unit 4: Research and Reflective Practice in an Early Childhood Setting

Introduces research skills and reflective practices essential for early childhood professionals.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

External Assessment: 50% of the course, including two externally marked exams on child development and safety.

Internal Assessment: 50% of the course, assessed through assignments on play, learning, and research in early childhood settings.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above (including Mathematics & English). A Level 2 Diploma for Early Years Practitioner or GCSE in Childhood Development would be an advantage.
