Course Summary

The course for A-Level is a popular one and it is not a requirement that students have studied Media Studies previously, however a good pass in English is a prerequisite for the course. Media Studies at A level is based around the theoretical framework of media language, representation, media industries and audiences. These concepts underpin all of the analytical work that students undertake with various media texts ranging from television, magazines, music video, advertising, radio, websites, newspapers and video games. Media Studies is a diverse subject that provides students with a good knowledge and understanding of a wide variety of topics and areas so is suitable for many careers.

Course Details

What will I study in year 12?

We will study the framework for Media Studies, including but not limited to, media language, representation, industry, and audience. We will look at the Component 1 set texts: · Tide · Kiss of the Vampire · Super. Human. Tokyo. · The Times · Daily Mirror · Janelle Monae · Sam Fender · I Daniel Blake · Black Panther · Have You Heard of George’s Podcast? · Assassin’s Creed.

What will I study in Year 13?

We will complete our coursework briefs; this involves creating a cross-media production set of pieces based on a chosen brief. Meanwhile also studying the Component 2 set texts: · Black Mirror · The Returned · Vogue · The Big Issue · KSI · Attitude.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Terminal examinations (70%)

Non-examined assessment (30%)


Entry requirements

Minimum grade 6 in GCSE Media Studies or minimum grade 6 in GCSE English

Media Studies is a very flexible subject that provides students with a good knowledge and understanding of a wide variety of topics and areas of everyday life. Primarily, the course provides students with a good grounding to work within various areas of the media industry.
