Course Summary

The mass media is a fast moving, rapidly growing, multi-billion pound industry. Studying Media at A Level will equip you with the skills needed to navigate and understand the extraordinary power of the media.

A-Level Media Studies is a massively varied and fascinating subject that covers a wide range of industries, media products, concepts, and theories. You will explore key media questions including investigations into the effects of video gaming on young people and the reasons why audiences consume so much crime television. You will also explore the political, historical, social and economic contexts of a wide range of media products and how they shape society and impact on our lives. The course provides a challenging but engaging view of the media world that we consume daily.

Course Details

The two-year course involves close analysis of specific media products outlined by the exam board which range from the Sims Freeplay gaming app to Maybelline cosmetic advertising to Men’s Health Magazine. You will develop your understanding in the theoretical framework of media language, representation, industry and audience, and their associated theories.

You will apply your creativity and knowledge of the media to your own production task; the coursework, enables you to select a project from a range of externally set briefs to construct a cross-media production campaign.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

This course is assessed through 70% examination. There are two equally weighted examination papers at the end of the second year. The Non-Examined Assessment (coursework element) is marked by the teacher and is worth 30% of the final grade.

Entry requirements

In addition to the general requirements for access onto A Level courses, a Media GCSE at grade 5 is desirable but not necessary.
