Course Summary

Media Studies engages students in the study of media products in relation to the four areas of language, audience, representation and industry.

Course Details

Students must undertake at least one cross-media study and must study at least one example of a media product from each form. They will be expected to demonstrate understanding of the contexts in which the products are created. The products chosen for study range across audiences of age and ethnicity. These represent engaging areas of the media for students to explore a variety of issues and debates.

Throughout the course students will be given the opportunity to create a range of products in order to create a showreel to support their next steps into the industry.

The department is well resourced with a range of cameras, microphones, lighting and industry standard editing software.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment will be through a combination of examinations 70% and non-exam assessment (coursework) 30%. Students will be required to study themes set by AQA in preparation for two exams at the end of the two year course. Paper 1 and 2 questions will focus on the analysis of media products, through a theoretical framework.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades at 4 or above including English Language and Literature.

Your next steps...

You could take this course to complement other Advanced Level courses such as English, Graphics or Theatre Studies. It will also lead onto Higher Education to study Media, related courses within the Arts and Humanities or more general Higher Education courses. With Further training, you could go into a job related to media such as a Journalist, News Reporter, TV Producer or Public Relations Officer. You could also go straight into a job as the Advanced GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the Media and Communication sectors. This course is a newly reformed A Level. All students will be examined at the end of the first year and any student leaving the course at that point will get an AS Level qualification. To achieve the full A Level all of the assessed units must be taken at the end of the second year of the course.
