Course Summary

This programme is the ideal broad introduction if you have a keen interest in beginning a career in engineering and will build up your basic engineering skills. You will also develop your technical knowledge. Completing this programme will allow you to discover which aspect of engineering is best suited to your skillset. This qualification has specifically been designed to offer progression onto the next level of study. The programme involves mostly practical learning around hand fitting, machining, fabrication, welding and electronics in engineering. You will follow a curriculum designed to give you the skills and knowledge to successfully progress onto a level 2 course or entry level employment within a range of engineering settings. You will build your skills around processes such as hand fitting, turning and welding until you are proficient in the process and can work on your own safely and to a good standard. You will need to complete three mandatory units: > Working safely in engineering > Carrying out engineering activities efficiently and effectively > Using and communicating technical information You will also take a number of optional units that include: > Making components using hand tools and fitting techniques > Carrying out sheet metal cutting, forming and assembly activities > Assembling electronic circuits This full-time course also includes a tutorial progamme which aims to help you to become successful independent learners, supports your well-being, provides careers guidance and advice as well as helps to further develop your knoweldge and skills to become active citzens who contribute positively to society. We will support you to develop your English and maths skills within the vocational context and, for those students without a grade 4 in these subjects you will continue to attend English and maths lessons. You will be required to complete work experience which will help to develop your employability skills. What is an NVQ? An NVQ (Nationally Vocational Qualification) is a work-based way of learning that recognises the skills and knowledge a person needs to do a job. Who is the course aimed at? This course is a first stage qualification for those who wish to pursue an engineering career and wish to acquire a broad range of competences to enable safe progression into the workplace or onto the next level course.

Entry requirements

A minimum of four GCSEs at grade 2/F or above, including English or maths.
