Course Summary
Sociology is the study of society on a number of different levels. It is a subject which helps explain social change, past, present and future.
It is a subject which encourages political and social engagement with contemporary social issues. It is a subject which involves being actively involved with social research and policy. You will gain an understanding of the significance of conflict and consensus, social structure and social action, and the role of values. Contemporary UK society is the central focus of study in this course. You will study the topics of family, education, beliefs in society and crime.
Sociological theories, perspectives and methods, and the design of the research used to obtain the data under consideration, are an integral part of the study of each topic area.

This course comprises three units, all of which are mandatory and all of which are assessed externally.
Unit 1 Education with theory and methods
Unit 2 Topics in sociology
Unit 3 Crime and deviance with theory and methods

Sociology is very good preparation for university, where strong essay writing skills are very important. Universities recognise that the study of sociology provides you with a very good foundation in social, political and policy knowledge. Sociology is regarded as a demanding and rigorous course which combines well with any other combination of subjects. Sociology students go on to a wide range of jobs in policing, research, teaching, medicine, politics and civil service as well as taking jobs in the service sector.
