Course Summary

This course will support you in developing essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of biology and how they relate to each other. You will develop and demonstrate a deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods, and develop competence and confidence in a variety of practical, mathematical and problem solving skills.

You will develop your interest in and enthusiasm for biology, and begin to understand how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society.


Course Details

Units (Mandatory)

Unit 1 Biological molecules; cells; organisms exchange substances with their environment; genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms.

Unit 2 Energy transfers in and between organisms; organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments; genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems;the control of gene expression.
Unit 3 Content from units 1 & 2 assessed through structured questions, including practical techniques; critical analysis of given experimental data; one essay from a choice of two titles.

Entry requirements

GCSE at Grade 6+ in Core and Additional Science as well at 5+ in GCSE English and GCSE Maths.
