About us

Welcome to Wye School

Wye School, which opened in September 2013, is an all-ability, co-educational school serving up to 600 students aged 11 to 19. It began with a single Year 7 group in 2013 and has grown each year since.

Through a broad and balanced curriculum which draws on the rich local environment and a wide range of exciting extracurricular activities, Wye School seeks to give each student an outstanding education.

As a Free School, it is independent of the local authority and free to attend. It is part of United Learning – a group of over 60 independent schools and academies across the country. It is quickly establishing itself at the heart of the Wye community and is working closely with other local schools and the wider community, in particular Ashford School, our United Learning partner.

We hope this website answers any questions you may have about Wye School. If you have any other questions, please contact us.

About us

We achieved our first, excellent, GCSE results in August 2018 and opened our 6th Form in September 2018. We are a comprehensive school open to all but take pride in being academic and offering a challenging curriculum.

Every year, we excel at securing students progression into their chosen destination, whether that be university, apprenticeships, or employment. In 2023, 100% of our Year 13 students progressed into their chosen destination. 65% went to university, 35% went straight into employment or an apprenticeship.

Student support

Year 11 to Sixth Form - key thoughts before you make your choices

1) What do you want to do for a career, & what subjects and skills do you need?

Subjects: These subjects are the most ‘helpful’ to get a place at a top university: Maths, English, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, History. But we also offer the following subjects to choose from: Art, Drama, Sports Science, Politics, Psychology, Sociology, Religious Studies, Music

Skills: - does your subject choice let you develop and demonstrate a range of skills?
Literacy, numeracy, communication, creativity, teamwork, analysis & evaluation, independence, initiative, enthusiasm, perserverence, resilience… and will the EPQ, CCF & DofE help you to further develop and demonstrate your skills?

2) Are there essential subjects for some degree courses and careers?

Some subjects are essential for some degrees: medicine & pharmacy courses require chemistry, most economics courses require mathematics but law degrees do not require law A level.

3) Will you get higher grades in some subjects? Balance this with whether your subject choice is helpful to get on to the university course that you want.

4) So how do you choose your A levels?

If you have a career or university course in mind, use these search tools, that look ahead to higher education:

and speak to your teachers… we have all been to university.

5) What school should I choose?

A level courses are a sprint taking 6 terms in Year 12 and only 4 terms in Year 13. Your year will be the first year in the last 3 to take full A level exams.

o If you change schools, will you settle in quickly?

o How important are friends – will you break into established groups at a new school?

o Do you need to be in a school that will let you change courses?

o Will you need some summer preparation to help you when you start studying A levels and would a new school provide this?

o Do you need small class sizes, teachers who know your strengths and weaknesses, and lots of individual support?

o Will your school help you get to university? The ‘average’ school has a 28% success rate, Wye School’s is over 75%
