About us

Welcome to Homewood School and Sixth Form Centre

For more information about our sixth form, the courses we offer and life at Homewood visit our website. www.homewood-school.co.uk/114/sixth-form-home

Homewood School and Sixth Form Centre is one of the best and largest schools in Kent with a highly successful sixth form.

Homewood has been established in the beautiful town of Tenterden for over 60 years. We are a school that firmly believes in the Comprehensive system; education for all. All our Sixth Form courses are open to years 12, 13 and 14 and so teaching groups may be mixed age. In this extremely popular and highly successful, mixed gender Sixth Form, there are over 400 students, including increasing numbers who join us from other schools in the area. Students are grouped in forms each of which has its own specialist Sixth Form Tutor. Sixth Form students meet their tutor for a personal, professional development session once a week, in addition to a weekly collective briefing, often incorporating a guest speaker and a carefully structured QUEST programme, which takes place during tutor time. Our expectation is that students register with their tutors every day and attend the briefing and mentoring sessions every week, as well as 100% attendance to all lessons.

Student support

Homewood is a supportive and caring environment that will challenge students academically whilst protecting and supporting their welfare and mental health. Homewood it an inclusive sixth form that welcomes students from all backgrounds and academic ability.

Homewood's Sixth Form has a history of success and has been praised by Ofsted for its depth of course provision and for the good care taken over students' personal development. Ofsted judged the Sixth Form to be good saying that; 'The curriculum offers outstanding breadth of opportunity for students, with a very wide range of academic and vocational subjects'. We have a contextual value-added rate for our students' examination performance at Sixth Form level amongst the very highest in the country. We enjoy above National average success rates for Advanced level results with well above National Average levels for students obtaining A grades, which is a testament to the ability of our students and the high standards set by our school.

We have a dedicated team of managers in the Sixth Form whose responsibility it is to ensure that all students are appropriately guided for this and the next important stage of their life. In a recent Individual Advice and Guidance Health and Safety check the school was awarded near maximum points and highly commended for the processes and procedures in place.

The Careers Adviser is on hand for one-to-one careers interviews on request.

Homewood had the first Sixth Form dedicated 'Food Pod' installed in our Common Room and we operate Healthy Eating and Fair-Trade policies within it. There is also a dedicated work area in the Sixth Form area and within the state-of-the-art Library facility a dedicated ICT area for Sixth Form students.

We believe that our students should have an input into the decisions within the school and as such they are frequently involved in the interview processes for the appointment of teaching and administrative staff within the school. A significant contributor to our success is that we believe in our students and we encourage them to apply themselves at all times. We know that they also to enjoy their time with us, as we hear this year in and year out, even many years after they have left, students will pull up in their cars or talk to us in the most unlikely of places and tell us that "My school years were the best years of my life - thank you".

What makes us different?

Our range of courses is second to none across Kent, we offer over 50 courses, which include A-Levels, BTEC Level 3 and other professionally recognised courses.

We believe that this personalised approach to learning will support the student for their future in employment and lifelong learning. We have an extensive range of new buildings designed for a 21st century curriculum.

Every year 12 student is expected to undergo a minimum of five days’ work experience, students are encouraged to make contact with and arrange their own placement. The sixth form has a 'Careers Adviser' as part of the staff team to help students secure these vital work experiences, and deliver small group and individual careers guidance.

We set entry standards according to each course and in addition students entering our Sixth Form will be required to undergo an interview, agree to a contract and have a positive reference from their previous school. Our usual expectation is for Sixth Form students to follow 3 or 4 courses or the equivalent in double subjects. In addition to our extensive range of A Level and level 3 BTEC courses, we at Homewood are proud of our level 1 and 2 offers in our Sixth Form (for returning Homewood students only) Homewood is a comprehensive Sixth Form and we have courses available for all learners regardless of their ability and GCSE results.
