About us

Welcome to our part of the on-line prospectus. Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys is an 11-18 selective boys Grammar School.

OUR VISION To provide an inspiring, safe and nurturing environment that encourages every student to achieve personal excellence in a wide range of academic, cultural, humanitarian and sporting activities and equips them with the life skills and sense of personal responsibility they need to realise their full potential.

OUR PHILOSOPHY at Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys is that education should be about giving young people every opportunity to explore and learn about the world around them. Working in partnership with parents, carers and the wider community. Our aim is to help the students who join us to become fully rounded individuals: the model citizens and parents of the future; young people who strive for excellence in all that they do and have respect for one another, their communities and the world in which they live. We do not believe that academic attainment in isolation is enough to give our students the tools they need to succeed in the world and though we are extremely proud of our excellent academic record and are committed to achieving the highest standards, we measure our success on more than just examination results. Visitors to the School report a tremendous community spirit among the students here, a tangible sense of pride in the school and a great feeling of mutual respect between staff and students.

THE SIXTH FORM "Students speak highly of the help they receive from individual members of staff and believe the sixth form has a friendly and welcoming community atmosphere." Ofsted. Beyond GCSE, we offer a thriving and high achieving Sixth Form environment. The Sixth Form has, at present, about 290 students on role, the majority of whom have come through the school. External applications are welcome from male or female students who are likely to meet our entry requirements of a minimum of 48 points from their best 8 GCSE grades with a minimum of grade 5 in English Language and Mathematics.

Our aim is to provide the courses you need, to give extensive individual counselling and support and provide you with an opportunity to contribute to the real and varied life of the school. The major difference between lower school (Key Stages 3 & 4) and Sixth Form is that you will have chosen to come to this school for your Sixth Form course. You will become more responsible for your own learning and progress, with teaching and support staff to support you and help you achieve your potential. At the heart of the Sixth Form lies a strong system of pastoral care; you are assigned to a personal tutor, your Form Tutor, one of a large team who are on hand to counsel you in your career and higher education decisions and offer academic and pastoral guidance. Teachers will treat you as an adult, responsible for your own learning and success. While you will receive a great deal of support, you are expected to demonstrate qualities of self-motivation and diligence, commit yourself to your chosen course of study and contribute to the general life of the whole school.

Our aim is that all our students enjoy their time here and have a very positive and productive educational experience - one that they can be proud of and can take with them out into the world. At A Level we expect our pass rate to be 100%. The vast majority of our students go straight on to university while others choose to go directly into employment or training or take a Gap year.

"This is a good school with a number of very good features. Standards are well above average, and pupils' achievements are good as a result of good and often very good teaching. Teaching is characterised by high expectations and high levels of challenge. Pupils' very good behaviour and their very positive attitudes to work make a strong contribution to their achievement”.
