Groundworkers are the first trade onto a construction and civil engineering site and they work closely with supervisors and engineers in interpreting design specifications to prepare the site ready for the structural building works to take place.

They continue their work throughout the construction phase, working with all on-site construction trades, such as bricklayers and plant operatives, up to and including the final completion activities of the project. Their work includes setting out and preparing the sub-surfaces ready for the structural work to begin, installing drainage systems, concreting, constructing roads and pathways and carrying out the finished hard landscaping.

Groundworkers are able to transfer between heavy construction and civil engineering sites as well as house building, commercial building and general building sites. Groundworkers work for all types of construction companies from small subcontractors to large main contractors.

A Groundworker Apprenticeship is the ideal way to develop the practical skills and knowledge needed for a successful career in the construction industry. Working alongside experienced professionals, you'll learn how to prepare and work on foundations, drainage, ducting and external paving across a range of residential and commercial sites, forming the essential groundwork that every construction project is built upon.

Training can be delivered in a variety of ways to meet the needs of both the employer and apprentice, including:

• One day per week at our training centre (day release)
• Block release, where apprentices attend training for a number of consecutive days at agreed intervals
• Training delivered at the employer's premises where appropriate

Throughout the programme, apprentices will receive support from an experienced trainer, who will carry out regular workplace reviews and provide guidance to help them develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the apprenticeship standard.

Apprentices will complete practical training, build a portfolio of evidence, and prepare for their End-Point Assessment.

Apprentices must secure an employer that is willing to support them through the apprenticeship and provide a role that aligns with the apprenticeship. English and maths qualifications must be completed in line with the apprenticeship funding rules.
