All technicians will be required to work on typical plumbing elements such as hot and cold water systems and storage, supplies to dwellings and associated pipework, above-ground pipework, connection to below-ground, sanitary pipework, fittings and furniture. Appliances and equipment can include central heating boilers, bathroom furniture, sanitary appliances, drainage and rainwater systems. Further to that, technicians will specialise in one of three areas:

Domestic gas fired hot water heating appliances technician: installation and maintenance of domestic natural gas systems and central heating and hot water appliances.

Domestic air source heat pumps & solar thermal systems technician: installation and maintenance of air source heat pumps and solar thermal hot water systems in domestic premises.

Non-domestic plumbing technician: installation and maintenance of plumbing systems in premises such as hospitals and healthcare premises, schools, high rise buildings, public buildings, industrial and commercial premises, etc.

A Plumbing & Domestic Heating Technician Apprenticeship is the ideal way to develop the practical skills and knowledge needed for a successful career in the building services industry. Working alongside experienced professionals, you'll learn how to install, commission, service and maintain plumbing systems, central heating, hot water and gas appliances across a range of domestic properties.

Training can be delivered in a variety of ways to meet the needs of both the employer and apprentice, including:

1. One day per week at our training centre (day release)
2. Block release, where apprentices attend training for a number of consecutive days at agreed intervals
3. Training delivered at the employer's premises where appropriate

Throughout the programme, apprentices will receive support from an experienced trainer, who will carry out regular workplace reviews and provide guidance to help them develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the apprenticeship standard.

Apprentices will complete practical training, build a portfolio of evidence, and prepare for their End-Point Assessment.

Apprentices must secure an employer that is willing to support them through the apprenticeship and provide a role that aligns with the apprenticeship. English and maths qualifications must be completed in line with the apprenticeship funding rules.
