Course Summary

This course is not just for those with highly developed artistic skills. The course will suit students who are creative with ideas, are able to take artistic risks with materials, techniques, processes and concepts. Students will enjoy working with a wide range of media. Students will need to be hard-working, motivated, resilient and able to manage their time both in and out of the studio.

Course Details

AS Course:

Component 1
Coursework is 60% of AS Level. Students will explore a specific theme in a variety of media and materials, while observing and understanding the work of artists. This will lead to them creating their own responses using the materials of their choice. This whole project will form their portfolio of coursework for Component 1.

Component 2
This externally set assignment is 40% of AS Level and 25% of A Level. This is similar to the coursework. The exam board will issue a series of starting points (or titles) to choose from. The teacher will guide and support students through their investigations. Once a title has been selected, students will produce artist research, experiments and relevant written work to support their understanding of the theme. The final outcome will be produced under exam conditions (10 hours) within the studio.

A Level Course:

Component 1
Personal Investigation is 60% of A Level. Students will explore a theme of their own choice in a variety of media and materials, while understanding the work of other artists. The personal investigation is supported by a written element of 1000-3000 words. This will lead students into researching, designing and creating their own art work under their chosen theme, in a material of their own choice. This whole project will form their personal investigation for Component 1.

Component 2
The externally set assignment is 40% of A Level. This is similar to the coursework. The exam board will issue a series of starting points (or titles) to choose from. Teachers will guide and support students through their investigations. Once a title has been chosen, students will produce artist research, experiments and relevant written work to support their understanding of the theme. The final outcome will be produced under exam conditions (10 hours) within the studio.
