Entry Requirements: - Vary by course please see individual subject information on this website. We also require students to achieve at least five Grade 5s or above at GCSE for Level 3 curriculum. For our Level 2 Pathway, students need to have five Grade 3s or above, inlcuding English and Maths

Course Summary

English Literature explores human experience and imagination as it has been expressed in written form over more than five centuries.

Studying English Literature involves a wide selection of reading such as plays, poetry and novels, and it is from here that your passion for a certain genre or literary period could be discovered.

Literature allows you to analyse:

The historical background of a text, or its relationship to the society of the author

The tradition of writing, either dramatic tragedy or thematic and historical tradition

Critical literary theory to enhance reading and understanding of the text What skills will you develop by taking this qualification?

Skills include reading for meaning, interpreting explicit and implicit information; exploring contextual features which shape a writer's text, and analysing writers' methods to investigate how meanings and ideas are presented to a reader.

Course Details

What topic areas will you study?

Shakespeare and Modern Drama: Teacher’s choice of Shakespeare Play and A Streetcar Named Desire

Novels: Teacher’s choice of two novels- Frankenstein and The Handmaid’s Tale OR Wuthering Heights and A Thousand Splendid Suns

Poetry: Post-2000 and pre-1900: A Collection from Poems of the Decade and the Romantics.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

80% exam with 20% NEA on two texts.

Entry requirements

Grade 5 or higher in GCSE English Literature and Grade 4 or higher for English Language
