Course Summary
A Level Physics develops students' understanding of the fundamental principles that govern the universe, from the smallest subatomic particles to the largest structures in space. Students will build on their GCSE knowledge and explore how Physics explains the behaviour of matter, energy, forces and radiation.
The course combines theoretical study with practical investigation, helping students develop analytical, mathematical and problem-solving skills. Through experimentation and data analysis, students will gain an appreciation of how scientific models are developed and tested. Physics is highly regarded by universities and employers due to the transferable skills it develops and its relevance to a wide range of scientific, engineering and technological careers.
Course Details
Paper 1: Particles, Waves, Mechanics and Electricity
Students study the foundations of Physics, including:
• Measurements and uncertainties
• Particles and radiation
• Waves • Mechanics and materials
• Electricity
• Periodic motion
This paper develops students' understanding of how matter and energy behave and introduces many of the mathematical techniques required throughout the course
Paper 2: Fields, Thermal Physics and Nuclear Physics
Students build upon the concepts studied in Year 12 and explore:
• Further mechanics and thermal physics
• Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields
• Capacitance • Electromagnetic induction
• Alternating currents
• Nuclear physics
This section explores how forces act across distances and examines the structure and behaviour of atomic nuclei.
Paper 3: Practical Skills and Astrophysics
Students complete a compulsory section on practical skills and data analysis before studying either the Astrophysics option or the engineering option. Topics include:
• Telescopes and astronomical observations
• Classification and evolution of stars
• The Hertzsprung-Russell diagram • Supernovae, neutron stars and black holes
• Cosmology and the Big Bang Theory
• Quasars and exoplanets
Students develop an understanding of how physicists gather evidence about the universe and use it to explain astronomical phenomena.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Students complete three externally examined papers at the end of Year 13. There is also a Practical Endorsement which is reported separately and assessed throughout the course.
Paper 1 – 2 hours and 85 marks – 34% of the A Level
Paper 2 – 2 hours and 85 marks – 34% of the A Level
Paper 3 – 2 hours and 80 Marks - 32% of the A Level
