Course Summary

The AQA Psychology course is a new linear A-Level designed to be studied over two years, with all final examinations culminating in the summer of the second year. The course itself allows students to develop a broad understanding of different psychological topics, methods and approaches. Students will study many modules such as, the nature of human memory, attachment in children, social influence and social change, biopsychology, psychopathology, the causes and treatment of schizophrenia, the psychology of crime, issues and debates in Psychology, and research methods. It is an extremely interesting course that enables students to understand many aspects of human nature, and how they are studied. While no prior knowledge of the subject is needed to study A Level Psychology, the usual entry requirements for acceptance into Year 12, a ‘B’ grade in Science, English Language and Maths are needed. Students will develop the use of specialist vocabulary and terminology and an appreciation of the contribution of psychology to an understanding of individuals, societies and different cultures. Essay writing is an essential aspect of the course and its assessment, and students will be expected to read widely and be able to draw information from many sources, including books, the internet and the media. In addition reading is also a crucial part of the course, with students being expected to maintain a reading journal and demonstrate their wider learning throughout the course. An A Level in Psychology complements other A Level choices such as Biology, Philosophy and Ethics, and Economics. Many students progress onto Psychology degrees, Business or medically related courses. The subject is an incredibly popular choice by students and is a good option to follow for those wanting to progress onto a variety of psychology-related careers, business, teaching or health related roles.
