Course Summary

An A Level in Classical Civilisation gives you an understanding of some of the oldest and most engaging literature and art ever produced. You will gain a deep insight into the Greek and Roman world, from which sprang much of European thought and art, and which underlies our modern cultural outlook.

Course Details

This course is uniquely interdisciplinary, combining elements of literature, history and philosophy. You will develop a range of skills, such as deductive reasoning, analysis and essay writing. You will study The World of the Hero, Greeks and Barbarians and Greek Religion. Progression to the second year of this A Level course will be dependent on having made satisfactory progress in the first year of the course, including achieving at least an E grade in a formal late spring assessment, as well as the maintenance of a good level of attendance and commitment throughout the year.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

There are three external examinations taken at the end of the second year of study. There is a mix of long and short answer essay questions using both critical thinking and source analysis skills. Progression to the second year of this A Level course will be dependent on having made satisfactory progress in the first year of the course, including achieving at least an E grade in a formal late spring assessment, as well as the maintenance of a good level of attendance and commitment throughout the year.

Entry requirements

To study this course you should have: At least six GCSEs and an average grade of 5, including English and Maths at grade 4 or above. OR A Level 2 in my chosen subject and GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4 or above.

Your next steps...

By the end of your course, a diverse range of progression paths will be open to you such as a degree, a high-level apprenticeship or an entry level role in the industry. Teaching and postgraduate research are clear career options for those who want to work directly with the classical material, but classics degrees also prepare students for a very wide range of other career paths. Many classicists go on to train for professions such as the law or accountancy. Companies are often ready to employ people with classics qualifications in administrative and managerial roles. Many of our A Level learners progressed into university. Juliette studied A Levels in Law, Psychology and Classic Civilisation, and progressed to Canterbury Christ Church University to study Law with International Relations. She commented: "I'm a completely different person to who I was when I started Sixth Form. I was very anxious in the beginning but now I am much more confident and have a clear idea about what I would like to do as a career. Once I have completed my degree I am hoping to work in London at a law firm as a solicitor or a paralegal."
