Course Summary
Pearson Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification BTEC National in Applied Science (Extended Certificate) allows students the opportunity to further pursue their interests and develop their ability and understanding of biology, chemistry and physics across year 12 and 13. This course will allow the students the opportunity to move into further education to support any future career pathways including forensic science, food science, lab technician, formulation chemist and most other scientific careers. Lessons involve high level teacher-led discussion and modelling, exam practice and technique, independent research, practical activities and coursework. The course comprises 360 guided learning hours which is equivalent in size to one A Level. There are 4 units mandatory units of which 3 are externally assessed.
Course Details
1 Principles and Applications of Biology – Structure and function of cells and tissues, biological molecules, enzymes and their role in organisms.
2 Principles and Applications of Chemistry-– Structure of the Periodic Table and its implications on physical and chemical properties of substances, through analysis of different bonding methods.
3 Principles and Applications of Physics- Waves and their applications; force principles and their application in transportation and construction of electrical circuits
4 Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques-– Practical applications across the sciences, including chromatography, colorimetry and electrical circuits.2 optional units, of which one must be selected. Mandatory content (75%). External assessment (50%).
5 Science Investigation Skills -– Investigative research, including planning, data collection, analysis and evaluation.
6 Contemporary Issues in Science-– Contemporary scientific issues including the reliability of sources of scientific information and their associated validity.
