Salters-Nuffield Advanced Biology (SNAB) is an advanced A Level Biology Course. The course uses real life contexts as a starting point to introduce relevant knowledge and understanding of biological principles. There is a focus on active learning using the multimedia resources that accompany the course. Teaching is from both concept and context principles.

Students should have an active interest in Biology to study this course with an aptitude to read around the topics to ensure a greater depth of learning.

How will I learn?

Science Nuffield A Level Biology (SNAB) is a diverse course where you will cover a range of diverse topics including plant biology, Ecology, Genetics and Human Biology.

SNAB aspires to be ‘the most exciting and up-to-date advanced Biology course’. Biology is highly regarded for university but the skills acquired at A Level can also be used in a wide variety of different careers.

Students will study a variety of topics over the course of two years including the role and structure of RNA and DNA; inheritance; cell structure; immunity and forensics. At the end of the course students will complete three written exams.

Paper 1: The Natural Environment and Species Survival

Paper 2: Energy, Exercise and Co-ordination

Paper 3: General and Practical Applications in Biology

The core practical work in A Level Biology is integrated into the course over the two years and will be examined in Paper 3: General and Practical Applications in Biology. Each paper will also include questions that target mathematics at Level 2 or above. Overall, a minimum of 10% of the marks across the three papers will be awarded for mathematics.

The entry requirements for this course are at least Grade 5 in Science Trilogy or separate Sciences and GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4. A good foundation is required to ensure successful course completion.

This course complements other A Level or BTEC qualifications and is an ideal preparation for study at Higher Education or a job related to Biology. Students who study Biology may be inspired to study Medicine, Marine Biology, Biochemistry or Nursing. This course will also help you develop the basic skills and understanding and knowledge that many employers across a range of industry sectors require.
