What do brewing, pharmaceuticals, forensic analysis, cancer drugs and pyrotechnics have in common? Chemistry! It is the foundation for lots of careers paths, degree courses and training opportunities for when you leave education.

Chemistry is everywhere in the world around you! It's in the food you eat, clothes you wear, water you drink, medicines, air, cleaners, you name it. Chemistry sometimes is called the "central science" because it connects other sciences to each other, such as biology, biomedical science, physics, geology and environmental science.

The course we deliver builds on the foundation skills and knowledge you have developed at GCSE, going into greater depth and studying applications of Chemistry real life situations. The course is split into Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, including Atomic Structure, Bonding, Energy and Rates of reaction, Equilibrium, Oxidation and Reduction, Aldehydes, Ketones, Esters, Halogenoalkanes, Alkenes, Alcohols and Analysis.

These ideas are extended with further study in year 13, where we look at applications of biologically significant molecules in industry, including the synthesis of Aspirin, measuring activation energies in chemical reactions and redox titrations.

These are the course requirements for automatic qualification. If you do not meet the requirements you should still apply and we will arrange for you to take a suitability test. GCSE Grade 6-6 in Combined Science or Grade 6 in Chemistry. Grade 6 in Mathematics and Grade 5 in either English Language or Literature.

Chemistry is directly required for medicine, veterinary science, and is also highly relevant for the food industry, retail sales, transportation, chemical engineering, accountancy… and many more!
