Course Summary
Before starting Construction, some key things to consider are your writing skills and mathematical skills as you will be required to use formula and write assignments. You will also need drawing on computers and by hand and have an interest in being hands on, trying new skills and techniques. The course will give you plenty of a deeper understanding of site management and critical thinking.
Course Details
The qualification has been developed in consultation with universities and professional bodies to ensure students have the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to progress to and thrive in higher education in construction or Architecture. Students will develop knowledge and skills in the following areas:
• Construction materials, technology, design, and sustainability practices
• Mathematical techniques to solve construction-related problems
• Technical design and communication through sketching, software, and visual presentations
• Problem-solving and critical thinking
• Cost control, contracting, procurement, and retrofit solutions
• Building Information Modelling (BIM) concepts and processes
• Cost estimation and retrofit proposal skills
These competencies, including problem-solving and critical thinking, are essential for success in construction degrees and the future of the industry, as well as in STEM education.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
There are five units, two externally assessed and three internally assessed, which cover the following aspects of
construction:
• Unit 1: Construction Principles 1 hour 45 minutes -An external examination set and marked by Pearson -90 marks
• Unit 2: Construction Technology 1 hour 45 minutes - An external examination set and marked by Pearson - 70 marks
Coursework units:
• Unit 3 - Construction design - The assignment will take 15 hours to complete. The PSAB will be marked by centres and verified by Pearson.
• Unit 5 - retrofit in construction - The assignment will take 9.5 hours to complete. The PSAB will be marked by centres and verified by Pearson.
• Unit 6 - modelling in construction -The assignment will take 12 hours to complete. The PSAB will be marked by centres and verified by Pearson.
Entry requirements
Grade 4 in Construction OR Grade 4 in Maths if new to subject.
