Course Summary

The Level 3 Diploma in Creative and Performing Arts aims to provide students with the skills, knowledge and understanding for entry to employment in the creative and performing arts industries or progression to further study at a higher level. The qualification offers practical, structured learning specialising in acting, giving students experiences and skills relevant to employment and further study, not only within the creative and performing arts industries, but also in the wider industries.

Building on knowledge and skills gained at Level 2, the course units will cover such subjects as acting skills, preparation for a performance, mask work, contemporary theatre, acting for camera, audition technique, theatre in education, historical drama and careers in the industry. Students will explore these both practically and theoretically, culminating in high standard performances. Students who embark on this course will have the opportunity to take part in course related experiences such as theatre visits, residential trips and school productions. The course is suitable for those with a love of theatre, drama and performing to build on their skills but also those who would like to develop their skills in presentation, communication, collaboration, time management, independent thinking and problem solving as well as building confidence. All vital skills for today’s competitive world.


Course Details

The course provides students with knowledge and understanding of advanced concepts such as the style and context of performance genres, audition techniques, planning, repertoire, rehearsal schedules, the nature of performance, collaborating with others, health and safety, technical requirements and reviewing/analysis of performances. Students will develop a solid grounding of practical/technical skills that will prepare them for employment or be developed in further studies. Core units also enable students to make connections between units, combining elements of their learning through requiring them to demonstrate understanding and skills developed in their optional units.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The course is assessed through one external assessment unit and six internal units. Assessment evidence is in the form of practical performances, rehearsals, journals, portfolios, videos and evaluations.

Entry requirements

In addition to the general entry requirements, a Merit at Level 2 Drama or relevant performing experience is desirable.

Potential careers include performing, stage management, lighting/sound/set design, TV and producing. Skills learned in the course are transferable and desired by employers in any industry.
