Course Summary

This is an exciting course which will allow students to gain a wealth of knowledge linked to criminal justice. A stimulating grounding in the study of criminology can be achieved. You will have the opportunity to acquire both practical and academic skills through applied learning, and the focus of some assignments provide opportunities to learn from practitioners in the criminal justice sector.



Course Details

The WJEC Level 3 Applied Diploma in Criminology is a qualification with elements of psychology, law and sociology that complements studies in humanities. This is an Applied General qualification. This means it is designed primarily to support learners progressing to university. The course offers exciting and interesting experiences that focus learning for students through applied learning, i.e. through the acquisition of knowledge and understanding in purposeful contexts linked to the criminal justice system. The course covers a range of topics such as crime and media, crime and punishment and covers aspects of sociology and law.

Students complete four mandatory units:

  • Changing awareness of crime
  • Criminological theories
  • Crime scene to courtroom
  • Crime and punishment


How will it be delivered and assessed?

Two units are externally assessed by an examination each of 90 minutes. Two units are internally assessed by controlled assessment.

Entry requirements

Grade 4-9 in GCSE English.
