Entry Requirements: Grade requirements: A minimum of 48 points from your best 8 GCSE grades with no less than a Grade 5 in all subjects taken. Certain subjects have additional specific entry requirements. Information on these can be found in the online prospectus.

Course Summary
This GCSE subject will enable you to learn all about Food in a range of different contexts.
• How to plan, prepare and cook healthy, appetising recipes and well-balanced meals.
• How what you eat affects your health and well-being throughout life
• Where foods come from and how they are produced
• How to choose, store, prepare and use a wide variety of different foods
• The laws relating to Food and Consumer Education
The course will be assessed as follows:
• You will complete three Short Tasks, all of which involve practical work. You will be given a set of task titles from which to choose – these will cover topics such as cooking for people with special dietary needs; using specific foods such as eggs or fish to produce interesting recipes; preservation of food; how to prepare food hygienically. You will be assessed on how you plan your task, the practical skills you show, the practical work you prepare and present, and how you evaluate your performance and the outcome of your task.
• You will complete one Food Study Task, which will involve lots of practical work, where you will investigate a Food and Nutrition theme (e.g. Food Round the World; Low Income Eating; Special Diets; Organic Foods) and prepare and present practical work to support all your research.
• You will take a written examination at the end of the course which will test the knowledge and understanding of Food and Nutrition that you have learned throughout the course.
Students who apply for this GCSE must possess the following:
1. A keen interest in learning about food, a flair for cooking and a ‘can do’ attitude to sometimes challenging practical work.
2. Good organisation skills – be well-prepared and regularly bring ingredients and specified equipment for practical work.
3. Good planning and communication skills – be able to keep accurate, up to date written records and submit coursework on a regular basis by the set deadline.
4. A high level of motivation, an independent thinker and consistent, committed learner.
THERE IS A CONSIDERABLE COURSEWORK ELEMENT IN THIS COURSE AND SO IT IS VITAL THAT A CANDIDIATE COMMITS HIMSELF TO PERIODS OF CONSIDERABLE WORK AT HOME IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THIS.
