ECONOMICS

Economics has been described as a subject for which one either has an inherent talent or not. This is an exaggeration, but it is certainly a subject that is not readily learned from textbooks alone. So why study Economics? The study of Economics has developed as a stimulating and challenging subject in the Sixth Form.

In short, there are few other subjects which give students such easy access to the material required. Each day the raw material is pumped out by the media. It is the way in which AS and A2 students process this information that makes it Economics. Creative and imaginative skills, problem solving, numeracy and ICT are among the other skills gained by a study of this subject.

COURSE DETAILS

We follow the AQA specifications in Economics. They aim to develop an understanding of economic principles and theories and help to develop study skills through reading newspapers, magazines, journals, financial and business reports.

METHODS OF ASSESSMENT - A2

In the second year of Economics, we undertake a further two modules and one investigative study:

4 BUSINESS ECONOMICS AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF INCOME

5 GOVERNMENT POLICY, THE NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ECONOMY

6 WORKING AS AN ECONOMIST - investigation

Each of the above modules is assessed through a series of essays and data response questions.

The investigation undertaken is marked internally by the subject teacher and assessed externally by the examination board.

5Bs at GCSE

You could take this course with other advanced level courses to prepare foe higher education in areas of Economics, Business Studies, Accounting, Marketing or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to economics, business, marketing, finance and accounting, human resources and public relations. You could also look at doing a trainee management course within a business to gain the skills, understanding and experience that they require so you can progress to working at management level.
