Course Summary

This course is equivalent to 1 A Level

This course is ideal for those students who are interested in pursuing a degree in engineering or going on to a higher-level apprenticeship. The Extended Certificate is a one A Level equivalent, so it is taken alongside two other subjects.

Course Details

The course has 4 units that you will undertake during your 2 years.

• Unit 1: Engineering Principles

• Unit 2: Engineering Applications

• Unit 3: Engineering Design

• Unit 4: Engineering Project

Unit 1 covers theoretical engineering and relevant Maths and Physics.

Unit 2 is a mixture of theory and workshop practical activities.

Unit 3 also is a mixture of theory and practical and incorporates the use of various CAD applications to create design.

Unit 4 develops project management and designing solutions for an engineering project.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Unit 1 and unit 2 are assessed via external exams at the end of the first year, while unit 3 and unit 4 are assessed internally by Pearson set assignments during the second year.

Entry requirements

At least five GCSEs graded 9-4 including English and 5-5 or above in Double Award Science and 5 or above in Maths. You would ideally have studied the higher-tier content for Maths and Science as there is significant mathematical and physics content.

Equipment required

You will need to buy appropriate protective clothing including protective footwear, overalls, goggles, gloves, ear protection, and masks. You will need to contribute towards the cost of materials for your project work, plus any trips and visits.

Students completing this course can progress on to study Engineering at university if they have studied A Level Maths alongside, go on to a higher-level apprenticeship, or go into employment.
