Course Summary
Paper 1: Creative Reading and Writing- This exam requires students to study a range of fiction, developing skills to analyse and evaluate fiction extracts from a specified century, whether it be 19/20/21st. The writing section of this component requires students to develop imaginative writing skills, based upon a prompt, to engage the reader and to use spelling punctuation and grammar accurately. These skills are externally assessed in a 1 hour 45 minute examination. The component is worth 50% of the final award for English Language.
Paper 2: Writer’s Viewpoints and Perspectives- This examination requires students to study a range of non-fiction texts, developing skills to analyse, evaluate and compare non-fiction extracts. The extracts will be from either the 19/20/21st Century.
The transactional writing section requires students to demonstrate their ability to write in a variety of forms, purposes and audiences whilst using spelling, punctuation and grammar accurately. This component is externally assessed through a 1 hour 45 minute examination. This unit is worth 50% of the final award for English Language.
Assessment of Spoken Language – As this is a resit, providing students have not got an ‘unclassified’ grade from the Year 11 entry, students do not need to resit this unit. All Speaking and Listening components, from any exam board, will count towards their overall award in the resit.

Terminal Examination Paper 1 – 50%
Paper 1 – Reading (fiction) and Writing (Creative) 1 hour and 45 minutes
Terminal Examination Paper 2 – 60%
Paper 2- Reading (non-fiction) and Writing (Transactional) 1 hour and 45 minutes

Compulsory for all students entering 6th form who did not achieve 4 or above in English Language at GCSE.
