Course Summary

Course Details

The A Level English Language and Literature course develops students’ ability to analyse a wide range of literary and non-literary texts while also fostering creativity through the production of original fiction and non-fiction writing. Throughout the course, students learn to work both independently and collaboratively, enhancing their confidence in expressing ideas fluently, critically evaluating language, and appreciating the ways in which writers shape meaning for different audiences and purposes.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

The course is assessed through three components. Component 1, Voices in Speech and Writing (40%), is a 2 hour 30 minute open-book examination in which students compare an unseen text with an anthology text and write an essay on A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams. Component 2, Varieties in Language and Literature (40%), is also a 2 hour 30 minute open-book examination and requires students to write an essay exploring a chosen theme, alongside a comparison of two literary texts. Themes studied may include society and the individual, love and loss, and encounters and crossing boundaries. The final component is the Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) coursework (20%), which consists of two original pieces of writing, one fiction and one non-fiction, accompanied by an analytical commentary. Together, these pieces total between 2,500 and 3,250 words and allow students to apply their understanding of literary techniques and language choices to their own creative writing.

Students will study a selection of texts chosen from a diverse range of authors and genres, which may include Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Bone People by Keri Hulme, Othello by William Shakespeare, Enduring Love by Ian McEwan, Betrayal by Harold Pinter, The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter, Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, Dracula by Bram Stoker and North by Seamus Heaney. Through the study of these texts, students will develop sophisticated analytical skills and gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between language, literature and culture.
