Entry Requirements: Some courses have additional entry requirements. These can be found on the prospectus.

Level 3 - 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or higher including English and Mathematics.

Transition - 5 GCSEs at grade 3 or higher. Either English or Mathematics must be at a grade 4.

Course Summary

Why study this subject?

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Science enables students to study the principles and applications of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as practical scientific procedures and techniques. Students will also have the opportunity to develop their investigation skills or explore contemporary issues in science.

The qualification is equivalent in size to one A Level and links to learning in other A Levels such as Psychology and Sociology.


Course Details

Units that will be studied

The course comprises of the 4 mandatory units:

Unit 1 – Principles and Applications of Biology

Unit 2 – Principles and Applications of Chemistry

Unit 3 – Principles and Applications of Physics

Unit 4 – Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques

Students will then also study 1 of the following optional units:

Unit 5 – Scientific Investigation skills

Unit 6 – Contemporary Issues in Science
