Course Summary

Global Politics is an exciting, dynamic subject that draws on a variety of disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. The study of global politics enables students to critically engage with different and new perspectives and approaches to politics in order to comprehend the challenges of the changing world and become aware of their role in it as active global citizens.


Course Details

The 2026 Global Politics syllabus examines how politics operates at local, national, international and global levels. Students explore four core concepts and three thematic areas:

Core

Power

Sovereignty

Legitimacy

Interdependence

Thematic

Rights and Justice,

Development and Sustainability

Peace and Conflict.

HL students also complete a focused HL extension of global political challenges using independent case studies such as the ongoing tension in the South China Sea.

The course will enable you to apply key political concepts to contemporary issues and cases, analyse and evaluate multiple perspectives and evidence. Communicate political arguments effectively in writing and debates and conduct independent research.

Assessment:
Paper 1
1 hour and 15 minutes source based questions 20% of final grade
Paper 2
1 hour and 45 minutes extended essays linked to the thematic studies 30% of final grade
Paper 3
1 hour and 30 minutes stimulus based question linked to the case studies 30% of final grade
Engagement Activity – internally assessed coursework – 20% of final grade

Entry requirements

Minimum of five 9-5 grades in GCSE examinations including English and Maths, and a grade 6 in a Humanities subject.
