Course Summary
Course Details
• We study two topics for the History A Level, but students will research a third topic independently for their coursework module.
• The first topic is the breadth study. Students will study the British Empire from 1857-1967. Students will explore why the British empire grew and contracted, what influenced imperial policy, the part that economic factors played in the development of the empire, the influence the Empire had on British attitudes, the way indigenous peoples responded, and the importance of key individuals and groups.
• The second topic is the depth study. Students will study Germany from 1918-1945. Students will look at political and ideological concepts as well as exploring the early years, the ‘Golden Age’, and the collapse of the Weimar Republic. Students will explore the collapse of democracy, the development of Nazi dictatorship, the development of the racial state and the impact of WWII.
• Students will do their own independent research into the topic of the Witch Craze in Europe. Student will have access to a variety of primary and secondary sources and will be expected to complete an essay to answer a specific question based on this.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
80% Examination and 20% Coursework Essay
There are two written examinations, each lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes.
• Paper 1: The British Empire c1857-1967. 80 marks. 40% of the overall grade.
• Paper 2: Democracy and Nazism: Germany, 1918-1945. 80 marks. 40% of the overall grade.
• Historical Investigation: 3500-4500 word essay. 40 marks. 20% of the overall grade.
Entry requirements
Grade 4 in History OR Grade 4 in English if new to subject.
