Pathways Offered:
  • Level 2 Pathway - For students who still need to resit their Mathematics and English Language GCSE's to gain a Grade 4 alongside Level 2 BTECs.
  • Level 3 Vocational - For students who have gained a grade 4 in their Mathematics and English Language OR English Literature.
  • IBCP Programme - For students gaining 5 GCSE's at Grade 4 and above including Mathematics and English Language.
  • Sports Academies (Basketball/Football) - For students wishing to pursue Sport professionally alongside their studies. The academy must be taken in addition to one of the other three pathways on offer.

Number of subjects required:

  • Level 3 Pathway - Please select three Level 3 courses (BTEC or RSL)
  • IBCP Pathway - Please select two IB Diploma courses and two Level 3 Vocational courses (BTEC or RSL)

Course Summary

IB Language A: Language and Literature SL - equivalent to 0.5 A Levels

In this course, students study a wide range of literary and non-literary texts in a variety of media. Students will investigate the nature of language itself and the ways in which it shapes and is influenced by identity and culture.

Course Details

Internal assessment

Individual oral (15 minutes)

Supported by an extract from one non-literary text and one from a literary work, students will offer a prepared response 10 minutes, followed by 5 minutes of questions by the teacher, to the following prompt:

Examine the ways in which the global issue of your choice is presented through the content and form of two of the texts that you have studied.

Paper 1

Guided textual analysis (1 hour 15 minutes)

The paper consists of two non-literary passages, from two different text types, each accompanied by a question. Students choose one passage and write an analysis of it. (20 marks)

Paper 2

- Comparative essay (1 hour 45 minutes)

- The paper consists of four general questions. In response to one question students write a comparative essay based on two works studied in the course. (30 marks)

- Free choice of literature text approved by teacher


How will it be delivered and assessed?

Internal Assessment - 30%

Examination – Paper 1 and Paper 2 – 70%
