Pathways Offered:
  • Level 2 Pathway - For students who still need to resit their Mathematics and English Language GCSE's to gain a Grade 4 alongside Level 2 BTECs.
  • Level 3 Vocational - For students who have gained a grade 4 in their Mathematics and English Language OR English Literature.
  • IBCP Programme - For students gaining 5 GCSE's at Grade 4 and above including Mathematics and English Language.
  • Sports Academies (Basketball/Football) - For students wishing to pursue Sport professionally alongside their studies. The academy must be taken in addition to one of the other three pathways on offer.

Number of subjects required:

  • Level 3 Pathway - Please select three Level 3 courses (BTEC or RSL)
  • IBCP Pathway - Please select two IB Diploma courses and two Level 3 Vocational courses (BTEC or RSL)

Course Summary

IB Film SL - equivalent to 0.5 A levels.

Film Is an important communication medium, social, cultural and creative art
form. The I.B film course aims to develop students’ interest and understanding of film through exploring a variety of film texts and theoretical readings.

Students will have the opportunity to become adept in both interpreting and making film texts and productions, gaining practical experience of professional film production equipment. The course will further develop students’ critical abilities,
enabling them to appreciate the multiplicity of cultural and historical
perspectives in film. To achieve an understanding of internationalism
within the world of film, students will be taught to consider film texts,
theories and ideologies from the points of view of different individuals, nations and cultures.

Course Details

Method of assessment: External

Textual Analysis (30%)

Students will be required to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of how meaning is constructed in film. They do this through a written analysis of a prescribed film text based on a chosen extract lasting no more than five minutes from that film. Students consider the cultural context of the film and a variety of film elements.

Students submit the following.

Textual Analysis (1,750) including a list of academic sources used.

Method of assessment: Internal

Comparative Study (30%)

Students are to carry out research into a chosen area of film focus, identifying and comparing two films from within that area and present their discoveries as a recorded multimedia comparative study.

Students submit the following.

(A recorded multimedia comparative study-10 minutes maximum)

Method of assessment: Internal

Film Portfolio (40%)

Students undertake a variety of film making exercises in three film production roles led by clearly defined film maker intentions. They acquire and develop practical skills and techniques through participation in film exercises and experiments and the creation of at least one completed film.

Students submit the following.

  1. Portfolio pages (9 pages maximum: 3 pages minimum per film production role, and a list of sources used.
  2. A film reel (9 minutes maximum 3 minutes maximum per film production role including one completed film.

Entry requirements

Grade 4+ in 5 GSCEs including English Language, and Maths

GCSE/Level 2 Media would be a benefit.

Your next steps...

University Degree level study of theoretical or practical film making. Digital camera operator, cinematographer, editor sound recordist, script writer and other vocational media/film industry employment.
