Course Summary

This course is an introduction into the study of creating IT systems to manage and share information. You will develop a common core of IT knowledge and study areas such as the relationship between hardware and software that form an IT system, managing and processing data to support business and using IT to communicate and share information.

In the first mandatory unit, you will study the role of computer systems and the implications of their use in personal and professional situations.

In the second mandatory unit you will study the design, creation, testing and evaluation of a relational database system to manage information.

In the third mandatory unit, you will explore how businesses use social media to promote their products and services. You will also implement social media activities in a business to meet requirements. In the optional unit, you will investigate website development principles and design and develop a website using scripting languages.

This course comprises four units, three of which are mandatory and two of which are assessed externally.

Unit 1 (M) Information technology systems

Unit 2 (M) Creating systems to manage information

Unit 3 (M) Using social media in business

Unit 6 Website development

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Written examination (2h) – externally assessed (33%)

Assignment – set and assessed externally (25%)

Assignment – set and assessed internally (25%)

Assignment – set and assessed internally (17%)

Entry requirements

GCSE at Grade 5+ or BTEC/NCFE at Merit+ in an ICT related discipline, as well as Grade 4+ in GCSE English. Candidates without a Level 2 qualification in an ICT related discipline will be considered through interview.

Your next steps...

This qualification provides an opportunity to progress to a degree in an information technology discipline or a degree where information technology related skills and knowledge may be advantageous. It also develops knowledge and skills needed for entrylevel roles related to IT, including vocational apprenticeship roles and trainee/entrylevel roles such as a social media specialist, web/content developer, or business analyst.
