The WJEC Criminology course is a Level 3 Applied Diploma, equivalent to one A-Level, that covers the psychology, law, and sociology of crime and criminal justice systems. Throughout this two year course, you will partake in 4 different assessments. These assessments include Changing Awareness of Crime, Criminological Theories, Crime Scene to Courtroom, and Crime, Punishment and Victims. Assessment includes written exams and controlled assessments, with the goal of understanding societal perceptions of crime, the reasons behind it, and the effectiveness of different policies and social controls. The course also allows for a number of different career explorations, through the form of visits to court rooms, as well as forensic workshops, where forensic techniques will be used to solve a murder.

Outside of regular classes, a realm of exciting opportunities awaits, including visits to the Houses of Parliament, engage in a two-day forensic workshop where you delve into a murder investigation, tour a prison, explore the Supreme Court, visit the Old Bailey in London, as well as the magistrates’ courts in Maidstone and Canterbury. You will take part in a variety of workshops, and we have several external speakers, such as Kent Police, a range of solicitors, and a forensics team. These experiences extend your learning beyond textbooks, offering hands-on encounters with real-world scenarios and institutions.

This qualification is assessed in 2 ways. Units 1 and 3 will see you undertake a Controlled Assessment which are worth 25% of your qualification. This is an 8 hour assessment, split over 2 days, where students are given a scenario in which to demonstrate their knowledge of each topic. Units 2 and 4 are written exams which you will sit at the end of both year 12 and 13. Again, these are both weighted at 25%.

Entry Requirements: A grade 5+ in English.

A grade 4+ in Maths due to some of the units involving an analysis of statistics.
