Course Summary

About the Course

This is a one year course aimed at students who are not suitable for Level 3 qualifications. It consists of a range of subjects to help students develop further so they can access further courses or training elsewhere at a later date.

GCSE English and Maths Retakes

The course provides students with the opportunity to resit their GCSE English and Maths to try and improve their grades.

Employability Skills

Students will study five of the following areas:

· Understanding and assessing their own skills or personal attributes for work

· Learning about managing money

· Preparing for a reflecting on a job interview

· Completing job searches

· Providing personal information to employers, e.g. CVs and application forms

· Health and safety in the workplace

· Work placements and work-related tasks

Other Subjects

A range of life and community skills will be delivered. The exact subjects will be dependent upon timetabling and the needs of individual students. These subjects might include:

Information Technology

Community Sports

Cooking

Finance

Work Placement

Students will spend two days per week on a work placement. Students are encouraged to organise this placement themselves, but the school will support where needed. All work placements will need to be health and safety checked by the school.

Course Details

Introductory Health and Safety Level 1

The CIEH Introductory Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety provides an awareness of key health and safety issues, and the part that workers should play in keeping themselves and others free from harm at work. The method of assessment will be an online multiple choice exam.


St John CPR First Aid

First aid saves lives, and knowing what to do in an emergency can make all the difference. This practical course will cover skills basic life support, including how and when to deliver CPR and understand the concept and use of Automated External Defibrillation (AED). There will be both, a practical and written assessment.


Introductory Certificate in Food Safety Level 1

The course will help you understand more about the importance of good food preparation. You’ll learn about training and cooking practices such as keeping yourself and your work area clean and hygienic, how food becomes contaminated and steps to reduce this. You will also learn how foodborne, pest and physical contamination pose serious health risks and the controls to reduce these risks. The method of assessment will be an online multiple choice exam.

Employability

Students will study five of the following areas:

Work Experience - two days a week, students will attend a work placement.

GCSE English and Maths will be added to students timetable who did not achieved a grade 4 during Year 11.
