On successful completion, this qualification prepares you to progress to higher-level carpentry courses, apprenticeships, or entry-level work in the construction sector.

Course Details

This course will introduce you to the core skills and techniques used in carpentry and joinery, giving you a strong foundation for future training or employment in the construction industry. You will develop practical abilities, industry knowledge, and confidence working with timber and woodworking tools.

Topics and skills you will cover include:

  • Health and Safety in Construction: Learn how to work safely in workshops and on site, follow safety procedures, and use protective equipment correctly.
  • Basic Tool Skills and Maintenance: Understand how to use and maintain a range of carpentry tools, including both hand and power tools, to ensure accurate, safe work.
  • Shaping Timber for Floorboards: Develop precision in measuring, cutting and preparing timber to fit flooring and other structural elements.

  • Building Frames: Gain the skills needed to construct timber frames, wall studs and structural supports used in modern building work.
  • Creating Staircases: Explore the techniques and accuracy needed to plan, cut and assemble stair components.

You will practise these skills in our well-equipped workshops, learning how to approach tasks with accuracy, organisation and attention to detail. You will also have the chance to take part in national skills competitions, such as KFE4Skills , and work on community projects, including Spring Community Week . These opportunities help you apply your skills in different settings, build teamwork and problem-solving abilities, and prepare you for future progression.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

You will learn through practical lessons in the workshops. Assessment will be through completing a portfolio of work, practical observations, written work and online tests.

To join this programme, you'll need the equivalent of 4 GCSEs at grade 3, ideally including English and maths.

Your next steps...

On successful completion you could move onto a Level 3 Site Carpentry course or Apprenticeship. Alternatively, you could seek employment within the industry (you may need to gain a CSCS Card first).
