Course Summary
This is a two year course which will result in a single A Level. This can be taken in a combination with other level 3 courses (including A level, IB and vocational).
If taken, students will need to choose two other level 3 qualifications and will be requested to do our mandatory enrichment programme. This programme covers a range of different employment skills, other qualifications and experiences that students can use for their post 18 destinations including the Extended Project Qualification (useful for additional UCAS points and developing research skills).

Unit 1: Pure Mathematics 1
1. Proof.
2. Algebra & functions.
3. Coordinate geometry in the x-y plane.
4. Sequences & series.
5. Trigonometry.
6. Exponentials & logarithms.
7. Differentiation.
8. Integration.
9. Numerical methods.
10. Vectors.
Questions may be set on any of the ten topics listed previously.
Unit 2: Pure Mathematics 2
1. Proof.
2. Algebra & functions.
3. Coordinate geometry in the x-y plane.
4. Sequences & series.
5. Trigonometry.
6. Exponentials & logarithms.
7. Differentiation.
8. Integration.
9. Numerical methods.
10. Vectors.
Just as for paper 1, questions may be set on any of the ten listed topics.
Unit 3: Statistics and Mechanics
Section A:
1. Statistical sampling.
2. Data presentation and interpretation.
3. Probability.
4. Statistical distributions.
5. Statistical hypothesis testing.
Section B:
6. Quantities and units in mechanics.
7. Kinematics.
8. Forces and Newton’s laws.
9. Moments.

Mathematics qualifications are highly regarded and are warmly welcomed by universities. Students who take mathematics are really demonstrating a strong commitment to their studies, as well as learning mathematics that is very useful for any mathematically rich degree.
On the successful completion of A level mathematics, students will be able to progress to university courses including (but not limited to): mathematics, accountancy, actuarial studies, architecture, operational research and computing. It is also the pre-requisite for many engineering and science based courses.
A Level mathematics is also useful for those intending to go into employment that requires strong mathematical ability. A level mathematics is highly regarded by employers and can lead into many professions including: civil service, army, RAF, navy, police and education.
Since mathematics is a facilitating subject, a grade C or above can boost an application for almost any route into higher education.
