Course Summary

The course currently has 4 units of work :

Mandatory Units –
- Ensemble Performance - This unit is completed under supervised conditions and EXTERNALLY assessed. You will use your musical skills and knowledge to prepare and perform as a musical group. You will demonstrate an understanding of rehearsal, interpretation, teamwork and performance skills.

- Practical Music Theory and Harmony - This unit requires you to give a presentation on signs and symbols used in music notation. Explore melody through scales, rhythm and applying this to composition. You then study harmony, chord progressions and cadences applying this to your melodic composition . Finally you are required to prepare a score for musicians with appropriate notation.

- Professional Practice in the Music Industry – This is another EXTERNALLY assessed unit. There are 2 parts in this 90 GLH unit. Part ‘A’ is completed in 4 hours in one week and Part Bis supervised with 3 hours over 2 days. This is about ‘professional practice’ within the industry. Understanding your job roles and behaviour, knowing the expectations and being able to display ‘employability’ skills.

Optional Units (we choose 1 of these)
1. Music Performance Session Styles - You will explore the role of a session musician including studying different genres, developing your knowledge of different styles and performing within a studio and live setting.

2. Solo Performance - You will explore the preparation, rehearsal and demands of giving an extended solo performance lasting 30 minutes. You will understand and develop the skills required to balance your programme, include contrasting genres and performing to a live audience.
