Course Summary
Philosophy is the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence. It examines arguments and concepts that are intrinsically linked to human existence. If you're looking for a subject which will help you develop the skills of critical thinking and analysis, then Philosophy is ideal. It is a challenging subject, but one which rewards those who persevere with it with a new understanding and approach to life.
Course Details
The course coves the following units:
- Epistemology:An introduction to the core foundations of philosophy, including explorations into the nature of knowledge and reality.
- Moral Philosophy: An analysis of normative ethical theories including utilitarianism; the nature of morality and whether it is subjective or potentially objective.
- Philosophy of Religion: What is the nature of God? Students will study historical and modern arguments to establish whether God's existence can be proven.
- Philosophy of Mind: An exploration of the mind-body debate. What is our mind? Is it purely physical, such as the brain, or could it be non-physical? Students will explore physicalist and dualist positions in this fascinating debate.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Assessment is by two, three-hour written examinations. There is no coursework element for A Level Philosophy.
