Course Summary

A-level Physics gives you the opportunity to explore the phenomena of the universe and to look at theories that explain what is observed. This subject combines practical skills with theoretical ideas to develop descriptions of the physical universe. You will learn about everything from kinematics to cosmology and many recent developments in fascinating topics, such as particle physics. If you are interested in the limits of space, the beginning of time and everything in between this is the subject for you. Physics is more than a subject – it trains your brain to think beyond boundaries.

Course Details

The course is linear, meaning that all A-level students will sit their exams at the end of Year 13.

Paper 1 - Measurements and their errors, Particles and radiation, Waves, Mechanics and materials, Electricity, Periodic motion.

Paper 2 - Thermal physics, Fields and their consequences, Nuclear physics.

Paper 3 - Section A, compulsory: Practical skills and data analysis.

- Section B, students enter for one of the following options: Astrophysics, Medical physics, Engineering physics, Turning points in physics, Electronics.

The practical skills assessment involves performing a series of twelve experiments in class time which are assessed.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Your grade is determined by how well you do on the theory papers. Your result in the twelve practical assessments is noted as an endorsement alongside your A-level grade.

Paper 1 - 34% of A Level

Paper 2 - 34% of A Level

Paper 3 - 32% of A Level

Entry requirements

Grade 6 at GCSE Science (Combined or Biology Triple)

Grade 6 at GCSE Maths.

Your next steps...

Maths is one of the Russell Group universities’ ‘facilitating’ subjects — so called because choosing them at A-level allows a wide range of options for degree study. A good grade in A Level Physics demonstrates to an employer that you have analytical and mathematical skills that you can apply to real life situations.

There are many possible career paths that it will create for you, for example: Engineering, Medicine, Forensic Science, Astronomy, Cosmology, Electronics, Power generation, Finance and many more.

Previous students have gone on to study BSc (Hons) Computer Science, BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering and an apprenticeship at BAE Systems.
