Course Summary


The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Psychology, which is 360 GLH, is intended to be an Applied General qualification for post-16 learners wanting to continue their education through applied learning, and who aim to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment, possibly in the applied psychology sector. The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to admission requirements to many relevant applied psychology courses. It also provides students with a number of employability skills, such as critical thinking and problem solving, communication and collaborative working, self-management and resilience.

Course Details

Students will undertake unit 1 and unit 2 in Year 1, beginning unit 3 in the summer term. Students will then complete unit 3 in Year 2 and one of the optional units.

1 – Psychological approaches and applications

Learners will explore four key approaches in psychology – social, cognitive, learning and biological – and apply these approaches to issues relevant to contemporary society. M Externally assessed examination

2 – Conducting psychological research

Learners develop knowledge, understanding and skills in the scientific process and in psychological research methodology through their own psychological research project. M Internally assessed coursework

3 – Health Psychology

Learners explore psychological approaches and theories related to lifestyle choices, unhealthy behaviours and behavioural change, linking them to their specific contexts. M Externally assessed examination

2 hours / 70 marks

4 – Criminal and Forensic Psychology

Learners explore the different theories used to explain criminal behaviour and the application of criminal and forensic psychology in the criminal justice system. O Internally assessed coursework

5 – Promoting Children’s Psychological Development

Learners study theories of childhood, factors affecting the healthy development of children and the role of professionals in promoting psychological health. O Internally assessed coursework

6 – Introduction to Psychopathology

Learners develop knowledge of psychopathology, types and characteristics of mental disorders and approaches to treatment, and the role of professionals in supporting and promoting mental health. O Internally assessed coursework

7 – Applied Sport Psychology

Learners explore key theories in sport psychology, their application to sporting environments and the interventions that can be implemented to influence sporting performance positively. O Internally assessed coursework
