Course Summary

WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGY? THIS SUBJECT IS WITHIN THE ERS & SOCIAL SCIENCES FACULTY AND IS THE STUDY OF HUMAN BEHAVIOUR. WE AIM TO UNDERSTAND WHO WE ARE, WHY WE THINK THE WAY WE DO AND WHY WE BEHAVE THE WAY WE DO. IT IS SUITABLE FOR ANY STUDENT WHO IS INTERESTED IN THE BRAIN AND HUMAN BEHAVIOUR. PSYCHOLOGY COMBINES WELL WITH OTHER SOCIAL SCIENCES INCLUDING: SOCIOLOGY, RELIGIOUS STUDIES, CRIMINOLOGY, POLITICS. BUT WILL ALSO COMBINE WELL WITH ANY OTHER LITERACY AND HUMANITIESBASED SUBJECT SUCH AS, HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY OR ENGLISH.

Course Details

What will be covered on the course?

All students will have 5 lessons per week and may have more than one teacher for this subject. This is a two-year qualification. The course is as follows: AQA A Level 7182:

Paper 1: Introductory topics in Psychology - Social Influence, Attachments, Memory, Psychopathology
Paper 2: Psychology in context- Approaches in Psychology, Biopsychology & Research Methods.
Paper 3: Issues & Options in Psychology- Issues & Debates in Psychology, Relationships, Eating Behaviours and Forensic Psychology.

All students will study for and sit all the above topics in their exams.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

There will be three 2hr exams at the end of the year, with 96 marks per paper, each 33.3% of the A Level grade.
There is no coursework element although practical’s and research

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades at 5 or above including English and a 5 in Maths and a Science is also required.

You could take this course to complement other Advanced Level courses such as a Science which could lead you onto Higher Education. Psychology gives you a good understanding of how people think and why they act the way they do making the subject extremely useful for any career that involves dealing with people. The course is a recognised Science A’ Level qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
