Course Summary
The A level Spanish course focuses on language, culture and society. It fosters a range of transferable skills including communication, critical thinking, research skills and creativity, which are valuable to the individual and society.
The approach is a focus on how Spanish-speaking society has been shaped, socially and culturally, and how it continues to change. Social context is studied, with a focus on the artistic life and those on the margins of society in Spanish-speaking countries as well as looking at the positive influences that diversity brings.
Pupils will study a popular literary text and a film during the course.

Theme 2: The political and artistic culture of the Spanish-speaking world

• Festivals and traditions
Theme 3: Immigration and Spanish multi-cultural society
• The positive impact of immigration on Spanish society
• Facing the challenges of immigration and integration in Spain
• The social and public reaction towards immigration in Spain
Theme 4: The Franco dictatorship and the transition to democracy
• The Civil War & the rise of Franco
• The Franco dictatorship
• The transition from dictatorship to democracy
The aim is to develop students' competence in all four skills (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking). Students will be encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and will be closely monitored and fully supported by their teacher.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Paper 1: Listening, reading and translation - 2 hours (worth 40% of the A Level)
Paper 2: Written response to works (the literary text and film studied during the course) and translation - 2 hour 40 minutes (worth 30% of the A Level)
Paper 3: Speaking 21-23 minutes (worth 30% of the A Level)
